Is Training Important When Implementing A New ERP Software?

When going through the process of implementing a new ERP software, many think that they can have cost savings by cutting out training.

  1. Define clear learning objectives:

The first step to success is to define measurable learning objectives for what your employees will be able to do with the new software.  Set objectives for your accounting staff that are performance based.  Set a number of transactions that need to be processed through the training process to validate and verify the process and training in the module that the employees are training in.  This will instill the process in the new software while at the same time working thru their current processes and the changes that need to happen for the new software.  Make sure that your goals are achievable to the employees and do not become burdensome.  If the process becomes cumbersome, the employees will not be interested in it, and then your training will not be successful. You will also not have the buy-in for the new software.

  1. Roll based training

While implementing new ERP software the best way to become successful is to train based on employees roles within the organization.  Develop training courses based on a variety of roles that way you can train multiple employees across a spectrum of roles.  If you train employees based on their roles and daily use of the software, it will enhance the value of training.

  1. Collect feedback

Feedback is important and can be vital to a successful implementation and rollout of new software.  Allowing feedback helps gauge user acceptance of the new software, as well as make necessary improvements in your training program.  If you allow an option for the feedback to be anonymous, this will help employees share challenges and concerns.  Training is not a one and done activity.  It is always best to continue to allow feedback to keep the lines of communication open.  You can always revisit training based on queries, suggestions, views and doubts.

To be a successful business, you need the ability to change and grow. The most efficient way to do this is to involve your employees in the infrastructure and selection process. By training them correctly, it is the best way to handle change management issues efficiently.
