Microsoft Announces the End of Management Reporter

If you are a Microsoft Dynamics user, your world has once again been shaken up. Microsoft announced on Sunday, at their Amplify event in California, that they will no longer develop Management Reporter. Yes, this feels eerily similar to a few years back when they announced that they were sun-setting FRx and replacing it with Management Reporter. Now, don’t let this send you in to a tizzy. Microsoft will continue to support Management Reporter until 2026. However, it’s not recommended to stick with a tool that is no longer going to be updated or enhanced.

Nevertheless, the tech giant wouldn’t leave users without a solution. Now available to users, on a current enhancement plan (going all the way back to GP9), is Jet Express. This is a product from the very popular Jet Reports, an Excel-based, financial reporting tool. The Express Tool will do Excel-based financial, as well as ad hoc reporting, that will pull from all GP tables! This means you can do subledger reporting, which is not currently supported in Management Reporter or FRx. Just like in Management Reporter, Jet Express will have unlimited licenses with Dynamics GP.

Switching to this tool will be a bit more time intensive, as there is no conversion wizard, meaning reports will need to be rewritten. Some would look at this as an inconvenience; however, it should really be looked at as a positive. This is an amazing opportunity to look at your current reporting and processes to see how you can improve. Many users have reports that are rarely or never used. Also, being that Jet Express is Excel-based, there are so many more features to explore and use in your reports. Chances are you will want to rewrite the reports anyway to get the full benefits of the tool.

Of course, there are several other, third party, financial reporting tools out there for Dynamics GP. Some are Excel-based, others have a data warehouse, some are web based, etc. There really is something for everyone.

This is a recent piece of news, so there will be more updates as the weeks go on. Jet Express for GP is set to release sometime in the next month. Keep watching the KTL Blog, Twitter, and LinkedIn for updates!
