Lions, Tigers, and HTML5… Oh My!

The Dynamics world is all a buzz with the news of GP2016 set to release right around Envision (Convergence for those of you who remember the old days.)  There are some great new features and enhancements with this version, one of the most exciting being the HTML5 Web Client!

The Dynamics GP Web Client was born in version 2013. The Web Client allows users to access GP from anywhere through a web browser. In some instances, people implemented the Web Client and did away with their terminal server, eliminating licensing costs. There was only one downside to the Web Client, it required Silverlight (long despised by MSFT users.) However, with the new version of GP, the Web Client will now use HTML5! There are a few reasons why this is such a great enhancement for Web Client users.

Previously, only certain functions were available in the Web Client when accessing through a mobile device. Now, users can utilize GP in full from any devices that supports HTML5 browsers. This means you can use GP on your android tablet, Linux, OSX, and browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, etc. Users run GP on their mobile devices, but computing is still done at the server level. In today’s world where the majority of the work force work from home or remotely, it is essential to be able to access business applications from anywhere on any device.

The Web Client is a perfect example of how Microsoft is moving away from on-premises deployment and out to the cloud. Today’s users want flexibility in their solutions, and companies getting a new installation want choices for deployment and an easy start-up. Cloud options, like the Web Client, mean GP can be up and running quickly because you have eliminated the need for complicated server set ups.

Not new to the Web Client, but always a great point to touch on, are the GP Self Service User licenses for the Web Client. These license allow non-accounting users to access GP to input time and expenses, purchase requests, view and update personal information, etc. And since you can access GP anywhere with the Web Client, employees can do these on the go instead of having to wait to come in the office or request a full GP user to do it for them.

If you are looking to upgrade to GP2016 in the fall, consider your current business structure and if the Web Client could be an asset for you and your employees.
